The transitional government in Bangladesh, led by Nobel Prize winner Mohammed Yunus, faces a Herculean task. It is supposed to reform the democratic system in line with the ideas of the various political currents participating in the government. One aim is to prevent a renewed party-political instrumentalization of state institutions and thus lay the foundations for a new political culture. Furthermore, the government must overcome the economic crisis. And finally, it must define its foreign policy interests and rebalance relations with players such as India, the USA, China and Russia. Germany and Europe must ensure that the reforms strengthen the independence of democratic institutions in the Muslim country and that social achievements, such as the advancement of women, are preserved
