The third anniversary of the coup by the junta was recently marked in Myanmar. The democracy movement has come a long way and has transitioned into a new phase. Although critics are concerned about fragmentation, they have underestimated the unprecedented levels of unity, accommodation, compromise, and political dialogue. While much attention has been given to the structures and processes of setting up new institutions, more efforts need to be undertaken on state-building and reconciliation for societal transformation.
