Bandung Conference (Africa- Asia Conference) and  South- South Cooperation: Solidarities, Knowledge and Worldmaking

May 6, 7, and 8 2025 at Ghent University.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This doctoral course examines the legacy of the Bandung Conference as a     geopolitical movement, a historical moment, and a critical trope for analyzing contemporary global events and South-South relations. In this three-day intensive, multidisciplinary program, participants will have the opportunity to explore the significance of the Bandung  Conference, engage with critical debates that cluster around it, and examine how it provides a framework for studying decolonization. The course will also focus on analyzing the interconnected and intersectional solidarities and movements within the Global South and the Global North. Furthermore, it will investigate the production of knowledge in, for, and about the Global South.

OBJECTIVES

• Contextualize the historical and political emergence of the Bandung Conference and South-South relations.

•  Investigate the theoretical and discursive tropes for understanding the Bandung Conference, Tricontinental, and South-South solidarity.

• Reflect on the relevance of the Bandung Conference and South-South solidarity in relation to contemporary global events and discourses.

• Examine emerging solidarity movements, knowledge production and frameworks within the Global South, and contemporary planetary actions and modes of worldmaking.

• Identify enduring and emerging social and political issues affecting the Global South and the broader world.

• Integrate the comparative and intersectional experiences of peoples in Africa, Asia, Latin America,  especially in terms of class, race, and gender.
