Dr. Mathilde Tarif is a political scientist specialising in conflict studies and the sociology of the state in Central Africa. She is currently an FWO postdoctoral fellow at the Conflict Research Group (CRG) within the Department of Conflict and Development Studies at Ghent University, where she conducts research on the reconstruction of the tax administration in post-war Rwanda and its interaction with international aid interventions. Her doctoral research, which examined the trajectory of the state in the Central African Republic (CAR) from independence to the recent crisis in relation to international constraints, received awards from the Scientific Interest Group (GIS) in African Studies in France in 2025. Mathilde’s work has been published in Politique africaine, Critique internationale, and Revue française de science politique, among others.
